Having the thing pulled down brings more attention to it than anything. They want to control marketing, release the footage on the official site, other wise, don't show it at conventions.

Trailers are advertising period. Its designed to get people interested who may or not know about the film. Its a commercial period
In regards to money the only interest studios have is money. The determination of which film they attach a trailer is attached to is similar to the they way an advertiser determines which televison show they want their commercials. They want to get as much exposure as possible from their film.
